The Future Is Here: Finding a Better Job with AI

The future is here

Job hunting.

For most people, even reading the words can set off a chain reaction of anxiety, frustration, fear, and anger.

AI tools are here to help you find a better job.

The technologies we use to find new jobs today seem to just make things worse.

Career sites can be mind-bogglingly difficult to navigate. Job postings…how do we say this politely…vary in quality. These factors and others conspire to make it feel almost impossible to find any job, let alone the right one for you.

But maybe things are looking up?

When it comes to job searching, companies are increasingly turning to AI-based recruiting technology to make almost everything about the process better.

Desk Scene

Humans make mistakes.

Hiring is an incredibly labor-intensive process, and the sheer volume of work required to find great candidates is one of the reasons mistakes are so easy to make.

When a hiring manager has to read 300 resumes, the odds that they’ll miss a great candidate are exponentially higher than if they could focus on just 30. Things slip through the cracks. Great talent can go overlooked.

AI-based applicant tracking systems (ATS for short) automate some of the most time-consuming hiring processes, letting companies focus on carefully reviewing good-fit applicants.

These systems also manage the process of applicant communication, interview scheduling, and other related tasks, ensuring that you won’t get ghosted thanks to crossed wires or confusion. However, ATSs aren’t without flaws (more on that later).

Going beyond experience

Good resumes and cover letters contain a ton of data. Information about your skills, education, experiences, and more are all baked in, and it can be a lot for human readers to unpack —  especially when they have a hundred others to review.

For many hiring managers and recruiters, it’s easiest to just focus on a small handful of categories — like years of experience or past job titles — when filtering out applicants.

Of course, this approach saves time at the expense of amazing candidates who don’t fit into whichever parameters are being reviewed.

You’ve spent quite a bit of time crafting your resume, and it’s frustrating to know that companies generally don’t read the whole thing.

Some AI-based technology can read your resume and cover letter, scanning for multiple keywords that indicate you’d be good for the job.

Still, many companies don’t have this technology, and much of it falls prey to old-fashioned human error (like choosing the wrong keywords).

Plus, when an ATS add-on searches resumes for keywords, candidates get left out just because they used different wording. It’s not a foolproof system by a long shot.

Candidates are complex.

Even with the most sophisticated AI-based resume scanning, there are still countless elements of your personality that aren’t going to be accounted for.

Those elements might be exactly what makes you the perfect fit for a position. Luckily, technology is already in place to mitigate this bummer.

Carefully engineered personality assessments that utilize machine learning are able to measure a substantially wider range of characteristics than resumes can capture, and can even match job seekers to positions that align with their traits and values.

Things like leadership skills, communication styles, or creative vision don’t always show up on a resume. If you have the opportunity to take a personality test as part of an application process, odds are you’ll be judged more holistically than you would be with just a resume and cover letter.

Times are changing.

All of this is great news for job seekers, but you shouldn’t take it lying down. There are a lot of things you can do to optimize your chances of success with AI-based recruiting tools.

At a minimum, you should make sure all your online professional profiles are up to date and reflect everything you have to offer.

But you should also look to the future, which is exactly what we’re doing here at GoodJob.

We weren’t satisfied with basic AI recruiting techniques — we know you’re more than your resume, and we want companies to see that. So we created a better way.

The GoodJob platform uses machine learning and scientifically validated assessments to match candidates with their dream jobs. No resumes required!

While some forms of AI-based recruiting technology are far from perfect, others are transforming the job hunting process for the better. Good things are coming, so you can look ahead confidently.
